Tamarind Bay

75 Winthrop Street
Cambridge, MA 2138

In a cramped basement and the service is a bit lax, but the food is the best Indian I've eaten anywhere in the US. Flavors are exquisite, nothing is too hot and the menu has enough variety to keep everyone happy. Going with a small group allows you to share dishes and is great fun. The wine list is unimaginative, but cheap, if you must have wine. The usual Indian beers are in attendence, so you won't die. I have been 3 times in one week just because I couldn't believe the Tandoor shrimp could really taste the way they did! Amazing.

Legal Sea Foods

20 University Road
Cambridge, MA 2138

Legal seafood is a chain on the East coast. It is generally popular and you'll generally get good food. I have never been particularly impressed, but it can be relied upon for fresh seafood and a comprehensive menu to cater for most tastes. On a recent trip I had the cold seafood platter. It was fine but small ($30), so did order a small cup of clam chowder in addition. That was forgettable. Wine list is broad with a range of prices. A 'flight' of wines can be bought which allows you to sample 3 wines you may not usually pick at a reasonable price.

Harvest

44 Brattle Street
Cambridge, MA 2138

More expensive and relatively formal restaurant tucked away on Brattle St. Eaten here a couple of times recently. The food is competently cooked, but is expensive and not particularly imaginative. This is a great place to have parents take you out to, or be on an expense account (as I am!). Service is attentive and about what you would expect for somewhere at this price point. Enjoyable wine list with some fun bottles for mid-range markups.

OM Restaurant and Lounge

92 Winthrop St
Cambridge, MA

Trendy bar and restaurant. The wait staff seem to think that they are more important than the clientelle, but the food more than makes up for it. On a recent trip had the 'steak and eggs' a wonderfully deconstructed interpretation of a classic dish. The egg had been dipped in panko breadcrumbs and deep-fried and served on top of a beautiful (if small) filet. The bar scene is small, but attractive with very dim lighting and a backdrop of a wall of water. Usually filled with men who at first sight you might assume were gay, but as they tend not to find much female talent probably leave at the end of the evening wishing they were. Wine and drinks in general were fine. Other than some cocktails decorated with a spritz of some essential oil or another, I didn't try the wine as they had my favorite beer 'Duvel'. At 8.5% I can usually be found in fine establishments falling off my chair after 4-5 beers ;-)

Fire & Ice

50 Church Street
Cambridge, MA 2138

So the place is cheap and of the Mongolian BBQ variety. Large groups of people seem to have fun at these locations, but I generally find them anti-social as people are constantly getting up from the table to get more food or wait around as the food is cooked for you. The choice of food is pretty good here compared to other restuants of this type, a good choice of salads and vegetarian options if that tickles your fancy. The drinks were cheap and cheerful beers and some overly sweet Margueritas.
